Private Lessons
Nicolas offers harp lessons to students of all ages and all levels of experience.
People can begin learning to play the harp at any age! Many of my students have started playing harp music in their 40s, 50s, and even 70s.
Children usually begin harp lessons when they are at least 10 years old so their arms can reach all the strings. However, for some children, playing the harp is a calling at a young age; children who are highly-motivated can begin to learn on a smaller harp!
I also offer master lessons for Celtic harpists interested in learning the Paraguayan harp or for Paraguayan harpists interested in expanding their skills.
Lessons can be provided at:
- My home
- Your home
- Via Skype
Approach
Nicolas teaches in the folk tradition of learning by ear. He starts by teaching the base rhythm for the left hand and simple melodies for the right hand. The rhythms and melodies become more complex and new techniques are introduced as the student gains proficiency.
Learning and playing the Paraguayan harp should be pleasurable for the student. Melodies for the lessons are selected based on the student’s preferences.
Practicing
I encourage students to practice between lessons; students who practice their instrument are able to learn new techniques and songs. The syncopated rhythms of the Paraguayan harp are new for most students and some people record or video the lessons to assist with their practicing at home.
I meet students where the level they are and encourage them to approach lessons, practice sessions and playing as a source of pleasure. I never make people feel bad or guilty for not practicing. Instead, I encourage students who lead busy lives to focus on the pleasure their weekly harp lesson and practice sessions provide, an important respite from day-to-day stressors.
